Baruch Hashem (thank GOD)!!! Today it finally became official: The Yassir Sharon unity government has collapsed and early elections will be held in late February or March. Sharon met earlier today with newly elected Labor chief Amir Peretz, and Peretz informed Sharon that he was indeed pulling Labor out of the unity government with Likud.
The posturing will now furiously begin, as Sharon must decide whether he will again run for Likud leadership and face the party's snarling members to his right, or instead form a more leftwing breakaway party of his own, consisting of Likud doves and old time Labor friends like Shimon Peres.
The nationalist and religious Zionist parties will also have some important negotiations ahead. Some polls have shown that a unified Zionist ticket would gain enough knesset seats to challenge for winning control of the government. The biggest problem may be getting the many factions together under a single ticket. The biggest sticking point is between Benny Elon's National Union and Zevulun Orlev's NRP (National Religious Party), as Elon is a nationalist Zionist looking to transfer the Palestinians to Jordan and make Israel whole again, while Orlev is much more dovish.

Any agreements made will be likely still be observed for the time being. However, if a more nationalist government leadership is elected in Feb/March than all bets are off.
But meanwhile you-know-who still gets to smuggle in the suicide-belters into Israel? Why doesn't the army etc. simply "lose" the orders until after the fresh elections?
Patience, Infidel, patience. The military needs to do what they must for now, but make no mistake...if the RIGHT government comes in the IDF will be speedily able to undo the concessions Sharon has implemented.
Returning the Jewish refugees to Gaza should be step #1.
i beg to differ madze - shouldn't step one be to "sanitize" gaza - the last step should be to return the jewish refugees. what they left should be restored fully. they will have plenty of compost to restore the greenhouses to their former state if this is done in proper order! Lord forgive me.
If by "sanitizing" you mean removing or transferring, than I would be very much in agreement with you, nanc.
I'm very happy, too, to see the government fail. Sharon may have become more of a a moderate lately when he removed the radical Jews from the Palestinian's land in Gaza, but he still refused to engage in serious discussions about Jerusalem and the Palestinian right to return home.

sanitizing could mean many things madze...my imagination might be overworking, but THE PALESTINIANS NEED TO GO BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN or become compost toast. i can come up with no other way.

warsucks - the palestinians are as incapable of sincere dialogue as you are - perhaps that is why you understand them so well. you are right about one thing though - the palis need to return to their countries of origin as i stated in my previous post. first on your list of things to do would be to educate yourself and then come back here when you are past the goo-goo, ga-ga stage. i guess they were right when they said that if you give a monkey a typewriter he will eventually make a word - warsucks is living proof!

How can a country win a war without hating the enemy? Why should the enemy ever surrender without the fear of being wiped out.
not to be too contrary bob, but my belief is that one must love their freedom more than hating the enemy. word picture i have given my children regularly since they were small: evil which is the equivalent of hate is fighting evil; who wins? good which is equivalent to love is fighting evil; who wins? think about it. i bet you have surrendered to love far more than you've surrendered to hate.
it is a difficult concept and goes against our human nature with every fiber of our being. we must fight however, but never out of hatred, but for our love of what we hold dear.
